Kuksa – the traditional olive wood cup

The history of Kuksa
Originally, the kuksa was made by its owner from a birch tree growth with a few tools such as a knife and axe, and then fitted with reindeer horn and leather hooks. Tradition dictated that the kuksa was never washed, but only cleaned in a stream or lake. The olive wood has the advantage of being scratch resistant, hygienic, acid resistant and does not absorb odors – making it the ideal adventure gear. The oil-wax finish makes it ready for immediate use.

The olive wood Kuksa is handmade by Petromax in Germany. It is made from the wood of the Olea Europaea. The olive trees are cut down because the olives can no longer be harvested – thus a resource-saving production takes place. This is how you take care of your Kuksa:
The kuksa can be cleaned quite traditionally in the stream – or with mild detergent and clear water. After each use it must dry thoroughly – if necessary, rub with a thin film of high quality olive oil. Avoid direct sunlight and high temperature changes. Strongly coloring liquids such as blackberry juice or red wine may discolor the olive wood kuksa.
